There, I graduated from the Second City Training Center and performed improv, Shakespeare, comedies and dramas-I even sang and danced on a cruise boat-without falling in Lake Michigan! A classmate of mine from Second City and I created and performed a two woman show for a year before I braved it alone doing stand-up comedy. When I returned from London, I relocated to Chicago where I lived for five years. I attended a local university majoring in theatre and spent a summer in London at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts where I learned about the “Old Bard” from amazingly talented teachers. Before I took pen to paper, I was an actress.

The 21st Earl of Suffolk, who has died aged 87, succeeded his father at the age of six and described his career in Who’s Who as “owns 5,000 acres” his reticence was, perhaps understandable, since he was one of the models for Jilly Cooper’s hard-riding serial seducer Rupert Campbell-Black, but it hardly did justice to his achievement in creating, at his family seat, Charlton Park, near Malmesbury, one of the finest and most beautifully cared-for estates in England.Ĭharming, spirited and always entertaining company, “Mickey” Suffolk loved the good life and was delighted to be associated with Rupert Campbell-Black, who first bounded into the pages of fiction in Jilly Cooper’s novel Riders. 'The Puzzled Penis', Internationale Zeitschrift fur Psychoanalyse, Vol. Spielvogel says: 'Acts of exhibitionism, voyeurism, fetishism, auto-eroticism and oral coitus are plentiful as a consequence of the patient's "morality," however, neither fantasy nor act issues in genuine sexual gratification, but rather in overriding feelings of shame and the dread of retribution, particularly in the form of castration.' The novel is presented as a continuous monologue in which the protagonist Alex Portnoy speaks to his therapist about his difficult relationship with his family, his country, and sex. It was during this period that, still a teenager, he wrote “ The Negro Speaks of Rivers,” a free-verse poem that ran in the NAACP’s The Crisis magazine and garnered him acclaim. Upon graduating in 1920, he traveled to Mexico to live with his father for a year. He would later write that he was influenced at a young age by Carl Sandburg, Walt Whitman and Paul Laurence Dunbar. In his Ohio high school, he started writing poetry, focusing on what he called “low-down folks” and the Black American experience. “I began to believe in nothing but books and the wonderful world in books-where if people suffered, they suffered in beautiful language, not in monosyllables, as we did in Kansas,” he wrote. The family eventually landed in Cleveland.Īccording to the first volume of his 1940 autobiography, The Big Sea, which chronicled his life until the age of 28, Hughes said he often used reading to combat loneliness while growing up. Mary Langston died when Hughes was around 12 years old, and he relocated to Illinois to live with his mother and stepfather. When he was a young boy, his parents divorced, and, after his father moved to Mexico, and his mother, whose maiden name was Langston, sought work elsewhere, he was raised by his grandmother, Mary Langston, in Lawrence, Kansas. Hughes was born Febru(although some evidence shows it may have been 1901), in Joplin, Missouri, to James and Caroline Hughes. 7/4/2023 0 Comments Crush by svetlana chmakova(It doesn’t last.) There’s an upcoming dance that adds to Jorge’s stress, some friend drama as Garrett makes poor choices in trying to become friends with a popular quarterback, James, and a terrible situation when everyone thinks Jorge made awful comments online (and won’t believe that someone hacked his account).Ĭhmakova’s books take me right back to all the middle school drama I remember and imagine. Things get weird as he tries to figure out how he’s feeling, and weirder still when he finds out Jazmine has a boyfriend. He has two great friends, Olivia and Garrett, and a huge crush on Jazmine, who he can hardly bring himself to speak to. People think he’s kind of intimidating because of his size, but he’s pretty awkward. This third graphic novel in the Berrybrook Middle School series focuses on the athletic and shy Jorge Ruiz. 7/4/2023 0 Comments Haiti by Laurent DuboisHowever, competing claims and settlements by the French led to the western portion of the island being ceded to France in 1697, which was subsequently named Saint-Domingue. The island was claimed by Spain and named La Española, forming part of the Spanish Empire until the early 17th century. Columbus subsequently founded the first European settlement in the Americas, La Navidad, on what is now the northeastern coast of Haiti. The first Europeans arrived on 5 December 1492 during the first voyage of Christopher Columbus, who initially believed he had found India or China. The island was originally inhabited by the indigenous Taíno people, who originated in South America. Haiti is 27,750 km 2 (10,714 sq mi) in size, the third largest country in the Caribbean by area, and has an estimated population of 11.4 million, making it the most populous country in the Caribbean. To its south-west lies the small Navassa Island, which is claimed by Haiti but is disputed as a United States territory under federal administration.
